The survey contact database was developed based on the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) database with inputs from databases from both the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Royal College).
The specialty or subspecialty of the Other Specialists was identified using the NPS database populated with the latest certification data from the three organizations. Physicians were counted either as Family Physician or Other Specialist based on Question 2 of the 2013 NPS survey. Question 2 was also used for more specific specialty breakdown. For more detail, please refer to the 2013 Complete Methodology document.
Physicians in the resulting database were contacted on four separate occasions.
The data collection period lasted April 2 – May 31, 2013.
An ID number, necessary to complete the survey, was assigned to each participant and included in the invitation e-mails. Alternatively, IDs could be looked up using a query program on the NPS website and those physicians absent from the contact database could contact an NPS team member for more information on how to participate. All responses were captured directly into the database.
Upon completion of the survey, participating physicians were eligible for a cash draw. There were two $1,000 prize draws available – one for early bird completion and one for all who participated. At the end of the survey, physicians were automatically directed to the online prize draw form. The early bird prize draw was carried out on May 10, 2013 for participants who completed the survey by May 3, 2013 and the second prize draw was carried out on June 21, 2013 for all participants who completed the survey during the data collection period. The winners’ contact information was, and remains, completely separate from the questionnaire responses. Click here(May) or here(July) to find out more about the prize winners.
